We don’t just have the perfect altitude, but also the ideal climate and rich volcanic soil to grow premium Arabica coffee. Bali Beans focuses on cultivating coffee in the most environmentally friendly way — naturally shaded by trees without using any chemicals. This follows the Balinese philosophy of 'Tri Hita Karana' (three principles: harmony among people, harmony with nature, and harmony with God). We continue to prove that we can sustain our traditional methods while being innovative in how we grow and harvest the perfect coffee cherries.
Bali Beans is part of a collective of local farmers organized into traditional groups called “Subak Abian.” These groups have historically acted as rural cooperatives, and over the years, we’ve shared experience and knowledge to refine the best coffee farming techniques — all in the most environmentally friendly and chemical-free way.
Our signature Balinese coffee requires rich soil at the right altitude, ideal temperatures, and the perfect balance of rainfall and sunlight to ensure a great harvest. However, climate change is real, and we and our fellow farmers have experienced shifts in rainfall patterns over recent years. These changes challenge us to find the best planting times. Unpredictable weather often results in lower yields. Still, by staying united through Subak Abian, we continue to apply traditional, eco-friendly farming methods to protect our soil. Because of this, our crops thrive even under harsh weather conditions — without the need for chemicals. For example, we recently agreed to plant more trees to help absorb excess water during heavy rains. These shade trees also protect coffee plants during intense sunlight periods.
Beyond focusing on chemical-free farming techniques, we put our heart and soul into developing our farming community ethically. We care for the needs of our fellow farmers and strive to involve them in every aspect of coffee production. Growing the next generation of farmers means providing education, training, and inspiring a new mindset within a challenging environment.
At Bali Beans, we’ve built a processing facility that allows people to learn about coffee and the individuals behind it. Our fully independent production facility also gives us strong control over the quality of coffee we share with our customers.
We believe transparency is the key to producing the best coffee. By processing our own beans, we ensure that every step — from picking and drying to roasting — is done to the highest standards and with respect for nature.
The washed process focuses on the coffee bean itself, as it depends greatly on how much natural sugar and nutrients the cherry has absorbed during its growth cycle. This method highlights the true character of single-origin beans, which is why many specialty coffees are processed this way.
The natural or dry process is considered the most environmentally friendly way to process coffee. Essentially, the fruit remains around the bean until it dries completely. While this method requires minimal investment, it depends heavily on climate conditions to ensure proper drying. At Bali Beans, we believe this process produces some of the most aromatic coffees, with rich and distinctive flavor notes.
Yes, you guessed it — it’s like adding a spoonful of fresh honey and caramel chocolate into your coffee. Despite its name, the Honey Process actually refers to the sticky mucilage left on the beans during drying, not the sweetness of honey itself. The outer cherry skin is removed, but the inner fruity layer remains as the coffee dries, resulting in a rounded sweetness and complex aftertaste.
Apart from the common processing methods above, at Bali Beans we take pride in our distinctive and unique processing techniques. We also keep experimenting with new ways to enhance the rich flavors of our exceptional coffee beans. Sign up and contact us to learn more.
The quality of coffee beans depends heavily on altitude, tree variety, and climate — but the true flavor and aroma only emerge after roasting. Once roasted, you can taste the unique characteristics of each bean. Roasting transforms raw green beans into the aromatic brown beans we all recognize. Few places in the world, like Bali Beans, allow you to experience roasting right in the middle of a coffee plantation. You can visit our Roastery facility during the Bali Beans Journey — it’s strategically located to connect you directly with farmers and nature.
For years, the Sudana family has roasted coffee beans traditionally. However, to meet the growing demand for premium Bali coffee, we invested in a high-quality Giesen W15 roasting machine, imported from the Netherlands. This machine helps us extract the best flavor profiles from our beloved beans, using a computerized system to maintain consistency across every unique roast. It precisely controls internal bean temperature to release natural oils (caffeol), enhancing aroma, acidity, sweetness, and overall balance.
During the ‘Bali Beans Journey,’ you can taste our different roast profiles — let’s see if you can tell the difference!
