VISION

A brand with vision often starts from someone's dream!

When we started Bali Beans, we had one dream — to make premium organic Bali coffee accessible to every coffee lover around the world. Since 1985, our journey has proven that dreams are possible when we work hand-in-hand with nature and care for the well-being of local farmers close to our hearts. With every freshly brewed cup of Bali Beans organic coffee, we uplift farmers’ lives — not only by preserving the environment but by helping turn more dreams like ours into reality.

PHILOSOPHY

Bali Beans Logo

Where ancient wisdom meets innovation!

Our premium coffee is grown by local Balinese farmers who practice the 'Subak Abian' farming method, meaning they work together in local cooperatives. The principle is to support each other, share knowledge and resources. Subak lives by the Balinese philosophy 'Tri Hita Karana' (Three Causes of Well-being), emphasizing that harmony among three elements brings peace and happiness. These elements are Humans, Nature, and God.

At Bali Beans, we understand the importance of this relationship and consistently follow the 'Subak Abian' farming concept to stay in harmony with nature.

Growing coffee this way means local farmers never use synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, or harmful chemicals that can disturb the natural balance. They also align themselves with the natural coffee production cycle.

NYOMAN SUDANA

It all started as a hobby.

Nyoman was born into a rice-farming family, but as the youngest of 12 siblings, he was driven by his thirst for adventure. At a young age, he was determined to help the world experience the best that Bali had to offer. He traveled across Indonesia in search of superior cattle and worked under a Dutch entrepreneur to export them to neighboring countries.

One night, 55 years ago, this young Indonesian stayed up late watching over cattle waiting to be loaded onto a ship bound for Hong Kong. His boss approached and handed him a warm drink to help him stay awake. That drink was Nyoman Sudana's first cup of coffee, and as he savored it, he could not have imagined that one day he would become the founder of a world-renowned Bali coffee company!

Seeing how much Nyoman enjoyed his first coffee, his boss began regularly handing him cups of hot drinks made from carefully selected beans he gathered from around the world during his travels. Driven by strong enthusiasm, flavor variety, and visits to various plantations across Indonesia, Nyoman became fascinated and eventually discovered his great passion and hobby — Coffee!

With his new knowledge and understanding of coffee beans, Nyoman was determined to produce authentic organic coffee from the fertile land of his homeland in Bali and share it with people around the world. But his strong desire alone was not enough to convince his parents to convert their family rice fields into coffee plantations — he needed their loving support!

WAYAN SARI

A hobby meets love.

In the 1970s, young Wayan Sari started her career as a jewelry saleswoman, traveling around Bali to meet potential new customers. On one of her trips, she decided to stop by Desa Lawak to sell her goods and happened to walk into the home of the Sudana family. Upon entering, she was immediately greeted by a young man named Nyoman. Not long after, Nyoman offered her a cup of coffee made from beans he had collected during his travels. Seeing how much Wayan enjoyed the coffee, Nyoman invited her again the next day for another cup so they could meet again.

The magic of the coffee beans was evident as the young couple continued sharing more cups together. Slowly, they fell in love. Before long, Nyoman successfully proposed to Wayan and convinced her to move to Desa Lawak so they could marry.

The newlywed couple understood the potential of coffee. After several discussions, they quickly recognized the new opportunities presented by their ancestral rice fields. These fields were enriched with volcanic soil from the Kintamani highlands, making it the perfect environment for producing premium coffee.

Nyoman and Wayan planted their first coffee trees together in 1981 and waited 4 years for their first harvest, which coincided with the birth of their daughter, Ayu Sudana. A double celebration in 1985! Year after year, the Sudana family plantation produced outstanding crops, with no turning back. Their sales knowledge and understanding of farmland elevated coffee production in the region to unprecedented standards. Today, the Kintamani highlands are recognized as the crown jewel of Bali. Inspired by their shared enthusiasm and Bali’s natural richness, the Sudana couple has spent decades sharing their love of coffee with the world!

AYU SUDANA

Co-Founder & Managing Partner

It is certainly no coincidence that the Managing Partner of Bali Beans was born the same year the family plantation had its first coffee harvest!

As a child, Ayu's world revolved around coffee. Beyond books, every morning she packed a change of clothes to head straight to the plantation after school to help her parents pick ripe coffee cherries. On weekends, Ayu arrived at the plantation earlier than anyone else, giving her access to fresh wild Luwak droppings (Kopi Luwak). The earlier she arrived, the more beans she could collect, which also increased her pocket money!

Over time, Ayu's parents trusted her to oversee daily plantation operations. She gained extensive experience by spending more time with the farmers and Bali Beans workers, learning everything about coffee and understanding the values of traditional organic Balinese farming.

Her immersive farming foundation from childhood, combined with her father’s love of travel and her mother’s environmental concern, fueled Ayu's dream to bring premium Balinese coffee to the world in the most natural and sustainable way.
